Outstanding Junior Scholarship (Spring 2023): Joshua Chio

Each spring, Georgia Tech’s chapter of Eta Kappa Nu (HKN) calls for ECE and CS students to apply to the HKN Outstanding Student Scholarship. HKN looks for students that live their lives guided by each of our three pillars: scholarship, character, and attitude.

Joshua Chio, a second-year computer engineering major from Dallas, TX, wowed us with his academic achievements and involvement in the Georgia Tech community. In just his first year at Tech, Chio had already begun making an impact through volunteering. Through is work in Hexlabs and GT IEEE, Chio helped organize the Robotech, Horizons, and Catalyst hackathons, raising tens of thousands of dollars from corporate sponsors and helping organize the events to serve hundreds of students. Chio is proud that his efforts helped so many students have the opportunity to participate in hackathons and is eager to organize more. Chio also enjoys volunteering with Engineers Without Borders. His work involves coordinating with contractors to help build bathrooms for an elementary school in need in Malawi.

To support himself through school, Chio has not only worked as a software engineering intern at Infosys but has also served as a member of the Alumni Association’s Roll Call team collecting money from Tech alumni to go toward making students’ lives better and as an undergraduate teaching assistant for CS 1301 helping students learn Python. In both his paid and voluntary work, Chio demonstrates a passion for helping his fellow students and giving back to his community.

“I believe that you only get what you put into a community,” Chio wrote. We were amazed by his eagerness to exemplify that statement and get involved in just his first year at Tech, and we are excited to see the impact he will have on campus in the coming years. Chio is currently involved in research through the Opportunity Research Scholars program, and he will be interning at Amazon this summer. His goal is to finish his bachelor’s degree in computer engineering then pursue his master’s in ECE through the BS/MS program. Following graduate school, he hopes to make an impact working for a big tech company. Joshua Chio is truly and outstanding student, and we are proud to announce that he is the recipient of the 2022 HKN Outstanding Student Scholarship.

Outstanding Junior Scholarship (Spring 2022): Amran Mamuye

The ECE Outstanding Junior Scholarship is an annual scholarship funded by the Eta Kappa Nu (HKN) chapter at Georgia Tech for students who are a junior by credit hours. The recipient of this scholarship is chosen not only based on scholarly achievements, but also for character, commitment to service fellow classmates, and contribution to the Georgia Tech community.

HKN would like to congratulate Amran Mamuye for her accomplishments and outstanding application for this scholarship. She has demonstrated the hard work and creativity that one needs to succeed at this school without losing her drive to help others in her community. One of her personal projects is building a mobile app based in Ethiopia that allocates blanket donations to those in need. Amran also gives back to her community by mentoring young minority girls in a program called STEM Power, where she helps them develop confidence and provides guidance with their STEM careers. Despite all of these commitments, she still stays very involved on campus. Amran is a member of Big Data Big Impact GT and is also a student assistant at Scheller’s IT services, where she helps faculty and students by troubleshooting hardware and software issues on-site and remotely. She has interned as a firmware engineer with AKXO and looks forward to interning at Facebook as a data engineer this summer. Amran truly embodies the spirit of Georgia Tech and HKN is proud to have her as a member of our community.

Innovation Scholarship Recipient (Fall 2020): Ayush Shukla

The Eta Kappa Nu Innovation Scholarship is a $1000 award to recognize an undergraduate student who has demonstrated outstanding technological innovation while enrolled at Georgia Tech.

Congratulations to third-year electrical engineering major, Ayush Shukla, this year’s recipient of the Outstanding Junior Scholarship! This coveted honor is awarded annually to an outstanding member of the junior class of our Eta Kappa Nu chapter, who has demonstrated a strong commitment to their field and community.

In recognition of his incredible achievement, here are a few words from Ayush:

“I’m Ayush Shukla, a third year undergraduate student at Georgia Tech, and I’m beyond appreciative to be a recipient of this year’s ECE Outstanding Junior Scholarship.

While I grew up in Wisconsin, I have found comfort in the city of Atlanta and with the Georgia Tech community. The prestige of Georgia Tech along with the constant innovation happening in today’s technology drove me to pursue my degree in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Computing & Intelligence. I have been involved on campus as both a Teaching Assistant and as an active member of our school’s IEEE Robotics team. Further, over the past two summers, I have interned at John Deere and Intel, both places where I have had the opportunity to work with the latest products in their industries. These experiences are ones that I will carry with me in my professional career. Additionally, beyond the realm of engineering I have served as VP of Finance for India Club as well as I am a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Society.

Following the completion of my undergrad I plan to pursue a Master’s in ECE focusing in the areas of embedded systems and controls. Beyond my academic life, I enjoy traveling with my friends, cooking new foods, and playing a variety of sports. All my experiences at Georgia Tech have excited me, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the future of ECE has in store for us!”
